Psalm 1: Mammoth Cave National Park

Abby, Tara, John, Eva and Luke
Abby, Tara, John, Eva, and Luke

Blessed is the one

who does not walk in step with the wicked

or stand in the way that sinners take

or sit in the company of mockers,

but whose delight is in the law of the Lord,

and who meditates on his law day and night.

That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,

which yields its fruit in season

and whose leaf does not wither—

whatever they do prospers.

Not so the wicked!

They are like chaff

that the wind blows away.

Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,

nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.

For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous,

but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.

The New International Version (Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan, 2011), Ps 1:1–6.

Theme: Righteous vs Wicked; Law of the Lord

Best Verse: 2 "But whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night."

Command to Obey: Meditate on the law of the Lord day and night.

Sin to Avoid: None.

Promise to Claim: Blessed is the one!

Application to Make: Do Quiet Time!

Something New About God: None.

Reflection: I must spend time with God every day by delighting in his law. I also experience God in his creation, and combing the tow, reading scripture in nature, is awesome. This morning two squirrels and a robin greeted me, and it is a brisk, damp morning. Most of the campground is asleep - my daughter Eva is wracked out in her hammock a few feet from the concrete picnic table where I'm doing quiet time. "Meditating on his law day and night" means all the time. But that is so hard to do. The day is filled with distractions and my mind will inevitably wander away from the Glory of God. But today I have begun my day on a firm foundation by reading and journaling about Psalm 1. And I can start every day with scripture, prayer and journaling (Even if I can't start every day at a National Park!)

Travel Journal: Mammoth Cave National Park is famous for it's very long and large cave. But it also has a nice campground and miles of hiking trials. The cave feels more like a lava tunnel with far fewer formations than say Carlsbad Caverns or other local caves. But it is vast and many of the caverns are very large. My family and I did the Historic tour, which I preferred and the Niagara Falls Tour, which Eva preferred. Both were great and I recommend them, they are both almost entirely loops and 2-2.5 hours in duration. Because tours have around 100 people there is a bit of hurry up and wait or what the Army would call an accordion effect, but you certainly get a sense of adventure and that the cave just keeps going and going. If you can only visit one cave national park go to Carlsbad Caverns. But Mammoth Cave is will worth the visit.
